Who’s art is it anyway?

When I make my paintings I know what I mean to convey, but that is probably not what other people see.

We all have a host of background experiences in our heads which affect how we have developed as individuals. it affects what holds our attention, our likes and dislikes and how we view the world around us.

The way I paint an object or scene is individual to me and I know what I am trying to convey. But everyone else has their own individual background experiences and that affects how they interpret any image that they see.

The titles of my paintings can act as a key to unlock what was in my mind’s eye at the time. A viewer sees what is most relevant to themselves so that adds another dimension. How complicated we humans are!

Fragile. An oil painting 50 x50cms on canvas that will be in the Dorking Group of Artists Exhibition at Betchworth Village Hall From 1st-4th May. 2026
